Philadelphia's most creative floral studio

Valentine's Day 2016

Here at Sullivan Owen we know there's a lot of pressure around Valentine's Day and we want you to know we're here to help. While we can't tell you if it's the right time to sign that card with "Love" or if you should go away somewhere with a champagne glass shaped hot tub because it's a holiday weekend,  we can send your sweetheart exactly the right flower arrangement-leaving you one less thing to worry about!

We don't know if he or she is "The One" but we do know flowers and everyone's hands down, most favorite color palette that we've ever, ever done is "Champagne" so of course it's back and ready to go for 2016. In addition to the classic "Champagne" palette, we're introducing "Sangria". The "Sangria" palette is a blend of warm peach and blush tones with wine and berry accents. It was tremendously popular last year as a secret menu item so this year we're just putting it out there. A huge variety of vase options and prices are available.

If you're the sweetheart in question hoping we'll deliver you the flowers you really want, make sure your sweetie knows what to get you for Valentine’s by saving the image below and emailing it or use the share button to tweet, post or instagram your favorite palette to them.

Designs start at $100 and delivery is available all around Philly, the surrounding suburbs, and even parts of New Jersey and Delaware. Delivery on Friday February 12 is preferred! Sunday delivery is available but we’re unable to offer times for delivery and someone must be home to receive the flowers so we think Friday might be easier for everyone and kicks off the Valentine’s Day weekend! Make sure to contact us ASAP at 215 964 9790; we sold out early last year and expect to sell out again this year!

Flower Magazine

I'm very excited to share my feature in Flower Magazine for their regular "Flower Show" story. With Spring as my inspiration, this was one of the most fun shoots I've worked on. It didn't hurt that I got to work with my friend Alison Conklin in my studio with our friend Amanda from Love Me Do shooting some behind the scenes video. Muppet the studio cat supervised of course.

When you're given the option to do anything you want, it's almost overwhelming to decide so I used these designs as opportunity to play with shape, color and vessels that I had been hoping to try or that I hope to do this coming year for clients. I hope you enjoy them!

Lunch with Martha Stewart

If you ever wondered if a celebrity makes their own Instagram posts, here's proof that Martha Stewart does! I recently had lunch with Martha at her office in New York City during the American Made Summit and Martha took an Instagram of my plate prepared by Pierre Schaedelin. The moment, including the goofy face I'm making,  was captured by fellow lunch guest Justin of Woats in Ft Worth Texas. Thanks for sharing the photo Justin!

Real Wedding

Spring has sprung (sort of) here and we’re getting ready for the start of wedding season. One of my favorite venues in Philadelphia is the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. We’ve done some amazing weddings at “The Hort” with the Starr Events team so while we’re looking forward to an awesome 2014, it’s nice to look back at Simone & Rich's beautiful wedding from November. Enjoy!

I was incredibly proud of Simone’s bouquet, sometimes the floral palette just comes together in a way I couldn’t possibly predict and it’s even better than I imagined it!

Winter Wedding-Brides Magazine

This stunning winter wedding we designed last January photographed by the amazing Alison Conklin was featured in Brides Magazine. I'm so happy to finally share her amazing photos and the hard work of all the talented vendors that made this wedding so gorgeous. Bridget & Tom celebrated their one year anniversary just yesterday the 26th! Bridget joined the Sullivan Owen team in November working with me and our brides. She'll be writing a few upcoming posts about the process of working with your designer and putting together all the details that make a wedding your own. Enjoy!

Cinematic Inspiration-Michael & Apollonia

This post started with a tweet by Anthony BourdainHe was shooting his show 'Parts Unknown" in Savoca, Sicily aka "Corleone" in The Godfather movie last week and tweeted a photo of the church where Michael Corleone & Apollonia Vitelli were married in The Godfather. I was reminded of how much I loved that wedding and started looking at scenes and stills from the movie. The floral palette is inspired more by the buildings and landscape then the actual scenes from the wedding. I used a rough planter that felt like an old frescoed wall and the oak leaf hydrangea and giant magnolia look tea stained, rustic and elegant to make a bouquet for the fictional Apollonia and a centerpiece for their reception at her father's Bar Vitelli.

Philadelphia Flower Show 2013

This year I was delighted to be asked by the Philadelphia Parks Department to provide the cut floral for their annual display at the Philadelphia Flower Show. The talented team who is responsible forone of our favorite wedding venues The Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park came up with an award winning concept and display. They created vertical garden walls that were designed to show the layout of Philadelphia and William Penn's 5 Squares which are City Hall, Rittenhouse, Logan, Franklin and Washington Square.

I was given free reign with color palettes and I chose based on the foliage plant featured in each vertical garden. My signature color palette can be seen in City Hall but I loved Franklin Square with is unusual mauve, plum, cream tones. A definite new favorite color palette.

While the show is hard work and a looooong 11 days, going to do maintenance at night when the show is closed is my favorite. At night I can take my time looking at everything and seeing the other teams interpretation of the theme. In my opinion a lot of the actual floral designs at the show are outdated or too theme-y but I still think it's worth a stroll around.

Working with your Floral Designer

Setting your budget for floral and decor: Setting the budget for your wedding is an important task. It’s about finding the balance between the wedding you want and the wedding you can afford. If you don’t love flowers, well you’re probably not reading this blog so let’s focus on you brides who love flowers and more specifically my designs which are lush, textural and full of all kinds of seasonal and interesting flowers.

You’ve got your date, the venue, the photographer and the dress. You might have even used one of those handy wedding calculators to help you budget. Well, it’s been my experience that those work just fine for those brides that don’t really care about flowers. But that’s not you. You found me because you saw my work in a magazine, on a wedding blog or one of the vendors I work with often raved about me and my team (because we are super awesome to work with by the way) .

Let’s go back to the calculator, sometimes those calculators spit out downright unreasonable numbers, like $500 for a reception with 25 tables. I don’t know a florist in Philadelphia who can do a centerpiece that looks like something on my site for $20 each. I’ve seen those calculators suggest that the floral budget should be 4-8% of the overall budget. When you work with a creative designer who works in season with an abundant and lush style, that budget percentage may go to 10-12%. If you want custom designed ceremony backdrops, a lavish chuppah or suspended floral designs or full towering tall vase cascading above your tables then you might be closer to 20%.

My suggestion is to get an idea of pricing for your florist before you’ve booked every other vendor. Sometimes when brides come in 4-6 months before the wedding, the only place left to cut is floral and décor and we hate to be the bearer of bad news. And if you’ve had to cut you floral budget, you might not be able to have everything on your wish list. It’s about adjusting your expectation along with the budget.

Book your appointment early, I’m happy to give you an estimate a year or so before your wedding that way you can have the look you love at a price that works with the rest of the wedding.  I think it’s better to have all the information first and then you can make your decisions. We also book up early for key wedding weekends so this way you can make sure we’re available for you as well.  As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about your wedding, we’re happy to help!

Philadelphia Flower Show 2012

I'm so happy to share a sneak peek of our work for this year's Philadelphia International Flower Show. It was such an honor to be asked to collaborate with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department and Starr Events to throw "A Wedding in the Park".  The team was inspired to share the gorgeous weddings that take place at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. My floral design concepts were directly inspired by this year's theme "Hawaii-Islands of Aloha" . I took a completely modern approach using only tropical flowers and clear acrylic. I'm definitely feeling more tropical weddings this year, color everywhere! We worked on three separate designs. First up is my Dendrobium orchid chandelier. This was true labor of love and a team effort to complete. The chandelier design is functional and holds water so the flowers will stay hydrated. I can't wait to try it with different flowers!

Here you can see Sammi and I standing over the fountain placing hundreds of orchids into the chandelier. No one fell in fortunately!

Finally, the 16 foot floral runner centerpiece. This was so much fun to work on and makes such an unbelievable impact. You can see it all the way across the room.

(labor) Day

If you caught the most recent Flower Files post, I featured a flower called Blushing Bride.  We’ve got brides on the brain ‘round here.

We helped 6 very unique brides celebrate their weddings Labor Day weekend, from simple flower crowns to a large scale hanging floral installation. I have to say that designing with each bride is by far my favorite part of the process.  I feel like I’m always in that design mode since we are either installing this week’s wedding or designing for next year’s bride!

We don’t have too many photos from all these weddings yet so here’s a few snippets for fun, from super subtle pale shades to bold purple & lime to wild & colorful it was impossible for us to choose a favorite.  The guests told us that these designs were the most beautiful they’ve ever seen and that’s what we strive for with each and every design. More photos coming soon…

Philadelphia Magazine-Best of Philly

If you were in Whole Foods South Street on Tuesday you might have seen two girls dancing around in the checkout lines much to the amusement of the cashiers. Adriene and Sammi were dancing in public because Sullivan Owen floral & event design was just named BEST FLORIST in Philly by Philadelphia Magazine!

OK, I admit that we knew we were up for something because the very talented Trevor Dixon came to the studio to take photos of me at work but we had no idea what our category was. I mean it could have been for Best Cut Flower Food or Best Faux Bois Delivery Boxes (it could happen).  I never dared to dream that the Editors of Philadelphia Magazine would honor me and my team in this way our very first year on the scene.  I can’t really express how much it means to me and the staff here at Sullivan Owen floral & event design.  We will continue to try to provide the absolute best designs and most beautiful flowers for every client and event.

Last night  T.O. and I went to the Best of Philly party at the new Cescaphe venue, VIE on North Broad. I was so happy to see Carrie Denny, Fashion Editor of Philadelphia Magazine and Editor in Chief of Philadelphia Weddings, Carrie has been a tremendous supporter of my work and the studio and I can’t thank her enough, but I’ll keep trying!

There were two wall projections featuring all the winners, I’m not ashamed to admit that I waited a LONG time to snap this pic of my name “in lights”.

T.O. and I were happy to run into our longtime friend and columnist extraordinaire Dan Gross of the Daily News and Philly.com who was scoping things out.  T.O. and I spotted James Van Der Beek and his wife enjoying the party, he’s in town filming a movie and is apparently super nice.  We also had a great time in the photo booth provided by Shutterbooth. Here’s our pics…

T.O. and I had some drinks & treats and met a few new friends including Stu and Janet of 3 Potato 4. I’ve been to their monthly Barn Sale before and we had a great time chatting, they won for Best Eco Friendly Home Decor.  Their next Barn Sale is this weekend, be sure to check it out!

Thanks so much to Philadelphia Magazine, the new issue is out now-be sure to pick it up!

Building 25 Blog

We are so excited to share the lovely post Julia from Free People wrote about the studio.  It’s so much fun sharing our passion for flowers and creating beautiful compositions.  We love reading the FP blog and find it so inspiring, we are truly honored they came to visit and had a great time.
