Philadelphia's most creative floral studio

Night at the Museum

In early March, Starr Events and the events team at The Philadelphia Museum of Art planned an evening to show a select group of guests just how great entertaining at the PMA can be. I was honored to be asked to design the evening.

I started my design process with a long visit to the museum. I wandered into a few galleries I had never been in and found a grouping of mixed media pieces from the 60s. This one particular piece was my jumping off point but in my distraction I forgot to get the artist's name!

With my inspiration in hand, I chose a floral palette of traditional Spring pastels toughened up with the addition of copper and plum tones and plenty of texture to keep things interesting.  The vessels all felt like pieces you might find somewhere in the Decorative Objects wing and every guest was able to take a design home at the end of the evening.

The gorgeous linens from Special Occasions, tableware from Party Rental LTD, dramatic lighting from Eventions Productions, specialty rental furniture from Maggpie Rentals and the perfect paper touches from Two Paperdolls were the perfect complement to the modern Folk Art inspired evening. As with most museum venues, candles and fire are an absolute NO. I decided to dress up my LED candles with hand marbled paper wrappers. This had a ton of impact for such a simple idea!

It's rare that I get to sit down at a table to enjoy the designs I work on but I was a lucky guest too. The meal from the Starr team was spectacularly delicious and sitting in the Great Stair Hall under Saint-Gaudens' Diana getting to know new people was a wonderful experience.

As one of the preferred floral and event designers for the PMA, I now feel even better informed to design in their wonderful and inspiring spaces. I'm looking forward to the exciting events we have coming up this year starting in May!

Thank you to Starr Events, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and Susan Beard for select photos!

Lunch with Martha Stewart

If you ever wondered if a celebrity makes their own Instagram posts, here's proof that Martha Stewart does! I recently had lunch with Martha at her office in New York City during the American Made Summit and Martha took an Instagram of my plate prepared by Pierre Schaedelin. The moment, including the goofy face I'm making,  was captured by fellow lunch guest Justin of Woats in Ft Worth Texas. Thanks for sharing the photo Justin!

Sullivan Owen for Poseybooth

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE Instagram. Probably because what I do is so easy to communicate through a quick snapshot. It's become my go-to social media outlet and I love the network of peers and friends I’ve discovered because of it. You can see my feed here @sullivan_owen

I found my new friends Poseybooth (@poseybooth) via Instagram. By following them, I discovered that they wanted to have a floral backdrop for their Lovesick Expo booth. Backdrops have turned out to be a specialty of mine, so I reached out to offer some assistance.

The Poseybooth team is a blast to work with and the photos speak to the quality and attention to detail they put into every booth and event. The backdrop was such a hit that Poseybooth is going to add a few versions of it to their already amazing photobooth packages. We’re still working out the details on that, but you should get in touch to book them soon. They’re booking up fast!

Poseybooth is also a founding member of Rabbit Rabbit Crew, a growing collective of awesome wedding professionals. You can read more about the RRC here. All opinions expressed here are my own. I like supporting new talent and so do my clients!

This year for the Philadelphia International Flower Show, Sullivan Owen partnered with the Parks and Recreation Department and Starr Events to throw a "Wedding in the Park". We work with Starr Events at the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park all the time and we love designing weddings in the fabulous event spaces. The Parks team did a phenomenal job of creating the gorgeous reflecting pond flanked on both sides with stunning cherry blossom trees with spaces for our Ceremony and Reception designs.

We worked exclusively with Hawaiian flowers as Hawaii was the theme of this years show. I can't get enough of Ombre and used the vibrant shades of the tropical flowers to their maximum effect. I love creating new ways to display flowers and designed this massive floating chandelier vase. The chandelier was a labor of love and I can't wait to use this again with different color palettes. Enjoy!

Special thanks to Jackie Bayne of Love Shack Photo for these images

Philadelphia Flower Show 2012

I'm so happy to share a sneak peek of our work for this year's Philadelphia International Flower Show. It was such an honor to be asked to collaborate with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department and Starr Events to throw "A Wedding in the Park".  The team was inspired to share the gorgeous weddings that take place at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. My floral design concepts were directly inspired by this year's theme "Hawaii-Islands of Aloha" . I took a completely modern approach using only tropical flowers and clear acrylic. I'm definitely feeling more tropical weddings this year, color everywhere! We worked on three separate designs. First up is my Dendrobium orchid chandelier. This was true labor of love and a team effort to complete. The chandelier design is functional and holds water so the flowers will stay hydrated. I can't wait to try it with different flowers!

Here you can see Sammi and I standing over the fountain placing hundreds of orchids into the chandelier. No one fell in fortunately!

You can't have a wedding without a great ceremony space.

Finally, the 16 foot floral runner centerpiece. This was so much fun to work on and makes such an unbelievable impact. You can see it all the way across the room.

I hope you'll check out the show from 3/4-3/11. The experience of being behind the scenes has given me a whole new perspective and there are some truly awesome displays to see this year!

Appleford Open House

Appleford Estate is a gorgeous venue outside of Philadelphia. Starr Events is one of the caterers for Appleford and they recently hosted an Open House to introduce clients to their fabulous food & drink and they invited some of their favorite wedding professionals including Sullivan Owen to attend.

The evening was styled by our great friends Styled Creative, filmed by Cinema Cake and photographed by Sarah DiCicco.  We all had so much fun with Loveleigh Invitations, Little Baby's Ice Cream and Eventions. All florals by Sullivan Owen.

Autumn Festival at Terrain

We'll be helping our friends at Terrain celebrate the Autumn harvest this weekend! We'll have bunches & bunches of locally farmed flowers designed in our signature style for sale along with our always elegant vase designs. We'll also be demonstrating how we make our unique and unusual floral crowns & hairpieces.

Be sure to come by Terrain this Saturday from 12-4 to celebrate this favorite of seasons. See you there!

Around the Studio

It’s time again for another Around the Studio post! We’re coming off a few really busy weeks, here's a bit of what's been going on... This past weekend I participated in The Modern Bride event at Busybee and cohosted by Swig. The event featured carefully selected vendors in all aspects of the bridal industry and we were so happy to participate. I designed several pieces for the event but these two were by far the most popular with the brides who attended.  These earthy but edgy pieces would suit a variety of wedding styles.

We’ve had a ton of deliveries in the Philadelphia Metro area and the color stories ranged from cheerful and wild to simple and understated.  We work hard to find the most beautiful fresh flowers and unexpected details like this gorgeous blueberry branch and the results are happy clients and excellent reviews.

This week we are preparing for all of the weddings we have in the upcoming Fall season. Organizing vases, finalizing flower orders and all that glamorous stuff. Our ribbon drawers were getting out of control but fortunately I found this amazing antique apothecary cabinet recently and now it’s displaying some of the vast ribbon collection which is sure to continue to grow.

We hosted a really fun class at Philadelphia Flower School last week, you can read more about it here.

And finally I had a lunch meeting with an up & coming model and his mom Andrea , Puppy Potty Training Master and owner of Walkies, the best pet care service in Philly and South Jersey. Lasagna may be modeling for us sometime soon. Here he is giving me his best Blue Steel…

Chef's Dinner for PAWS

On Monday June 27 forty of the area’s top chefs gathered for the 7th Annual Chef’s Dinner for PAWS. This wonderful event raised over $230,000 for Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society and was such a great time for both attendees and the chefs! Sullivan Owen floral & event design was asked to participate in this prestigious event and we were lucky enough to design for two of the superstar chefs!

We designed a custom table linen and two large floral designs for Delilah’s. The bold juicy colors and wild designs were the perfect complement to the delicious appetizers prepared by Chef Stuart Pellegrino.  There were brightly colored orchids scattered on the table to finish the design off. Delilah’s is a world renowned gentlemen’s club and steakhouse so it was important that we capture both the style and beauty that Delilah’s is known for.  We got a ton of compliments on the table design and had so much fun working on it!

Sullivan Owen floral & event design was asked to participate in this prestigious event and we were lucky enough to design for two of the superstar chefs!

We also designed a dinner table for Chef Quincy Logan of Union Trust-Philadelphia’s Steakhouse. If you haven’t eaten at Union Trust you should hurry up and make a reservation because Quincy is immensely talented and the restaurant boasts stunning architecture and interior design. Housed in a the former Federal Reserve Bank for the Union during the Civil War the restaurant has been both meticulously restored as well as updated for an unparalleled dining experience.

I was fortunate to be fed an “inspirational” dinner before designing the Union Trust table and I LOVED everything I ate at the restaurant. Quincy uses ingredients grown in our local area, even some of the steaks come from a local farm and so we decided to use only locally grown ingredients in our design. We used organic and locally grown flowers, herbs and wheat grass from Bucks County, Lancaster and New Jersey. We featured locally grown veggies as part of the design and even used local beeswax for our custom made candles. The concept of the design was a modern take on the local and organic movement.  The table came out beautifully and I’m proud that my inspiration came from the exceptional food Union Trust is known for and that we used locally grown ingredients!

We loved participating in such a worthwhile event for an important cause.  You can learn about the many ways you can help PAWS here.

PAWS Preview

Just dropping by with a quick post since we are zooming around the studio and singing at the top of our lungs while finishing a bunch of designs to take over to the Union League for the 7th Annual Chef’s Dinner for PAWS.  This is a fabulous event for such a wonderful cause, we were super excited to be asked to participate!

We’re providing florals and décor for several of the chef’s stations but  for now here’s a sneak peek of some of the gorgeous blooms that will be making an appearance tonight…
