Philadelphia's most creative floral studio

Philadelphia Flower Show 2013

This year I was delighted to be asked by the Philadelphia Parks Department to provide the cut floral for their annual display at the Philadelphia Flower Show. The talented team who is responsible forone of our favorite wedding venues The Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park came up with an award winning concept and display. They created vertical garden walls that were designed to show the layout of Philadelphia and William Penn's 5 Squares which are City Hall, Rittenhouse, Logan, Franklin and Washington Square.

I was given free reign with color palettes and I chose based on the foliage plant featured in each vertical garden. My signature color palette can be seen in City Hall but I loved Franklin Square with is unusual mauve, plum, cream tones. A definite new favorite color palette.

While the show is hard work and a looooong 11 days, going to do maintenance at night when the show is closed is my favorite. At night I can take my time looking at everything and seeing the other teams interpretation of the theme. In my opinion a lot of the actual floral designs at the show are outdated or too theme-y but I still think it's worth a stroll around.

Sneak Peek: Dahlia-Wood

No, it's not really called Dahlia-Wood but we paid a visit to our favorite local grower in an undisclosed location (seriously, he has a wholesale agent) today to pick up these beauties for a wedding this weekend that's shaping up to be stunning. Keep an eye on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook for more photos!

Sneak Peek: Schoolin' It

I'll be teaching my first class in partnership with Flower School NY this July, the Flower Shop Series! I'm so very honored as Flower School NY is the school I attended 3 years ago when I started designing. I'm thrilled they consider me "one of their most successful alumni" and I look forward to teaching students the workflow of owning a flower shop and discussing the floral business. It wouldn't be Flower School NY without flowers so we'll be working on real world projects, designing for different occasionsand preparing the flowers and packaging. We'll also discuss marketing & social media strategies. See more and register here...

I also taught two Peony classes in May, they were so much fun. You can see more photos on the Philadelphia Flower School site but here's a peek.

"It was such a relaxing way to meet local small businesses and guests from Portland & Brooklyn including a new flower friend, the talented Amy Merrick. Lovely images are sure to come from the talented photographers and film makersattending but for now here are a few from me.

The table, which we all set together was kept simple to allow for the tons of family style dishes we stuffed ourselves with so I just did a simple sprig of wild blueberry for the menu.

I did one extravagant design for the bar and I was totally in love with it.  I also brought 50 recycled bottles of blooms for guests to take home and I loved all the tweets from happy guests enjoying their flowers.

Sneak Peek: Lacroix 40th Birthday

We had a very busy weekend with weddings, showers and this gorgeous 40th birthday party for twin sisters on Saturday at Lacroix in the Rittenhouse Hotel. The twins L & D teamed up to throw a  glamorous birthday dinner for themselves and we provided a few fabulous floral pieces for the celebration, including two amazing floral chair back pieces for the twins chairs for the evening. Happy Birthday L & D, we hope you had a fantastic evening!

Here's a few photos snapped after setting up. Pardon the phone photos...

Sneak Peek: A Date with a Plate

A Date with a Plate is an annual event to raise funds for various charitable initiatives. About 20 designers each set up a tablescape to showcase our talents and the variety of different concepts was fantastic.  As is my style, I went for  lush florals in just two large statement pieces. With table, chairs and place settings from Maggpie and warm cafe lighting our space was very "me". One designer told me it was "very Hamptons dinner party". Yellow is not a color that I have gravitated towards in the past but after discovering all these pale yellow, candlelight and amber varieties I think we'll be seeing more of them. It was also fun to come up with another way to decorate my new favorite prop, the fireplace.  What do you think?

Sneak Peek: Floral Collage

Today's post is a true sneak peek. We're eagerly awaiting the professional photos of S.O. designer Adriene's wedding from pal Jillian McGrath but in the meantime we thought we'd share the process of creating the striking floral collage backdrops that were used in Adriene's ceremony at the Magic Gardens.

Since Adriene has been working with flowers and weddings for a while, she was probably one of the more difficult brides to pin down to a concept or color palette. For months every time I would make a new bridal bouquet, she'd say "I want that to be my bouquet" and each time it would be new colors, flowers and ideas.  Finally, when she had a date, a venue and a plan she hit me with this one "Make my wedding look just like this print I love"

Allusion by Yellena

In the course of several conversations and a visit or two to the Gardens, we discovered that it would look best if we concealed the door and window in the gallery room where her ceremony was to take place. We didn't want to pipe and drape, that would cover up the lovely mosaic that makes the room special. My solution, create custom canvases that would have areas of fresh flowers as part of the art. Adriene cleared it with Yellena first to make sure she was ok with being the inspiration.

We worked on them over the course of a month or so. There are layers of paint, fabric, ribbon and trim with  the fresh flower panels added the night before the wedding. Stay tuned for much more on this very special wedding coming soon!

Sneak Peek: Borrowed Event

Did you make it to Borrowed in Baltimore? If you didn't you surely missed out on a really creative and fun bridal event. I can't even call it a bridal show because it's so far beyond just a show. We were super honored to be the floral partner for Borrowed and we worked on all those fun trailers and promotional shoots for the past year gearing up for the big day with Birdhouse Productions and Jillian McGrath Photography. You can check them out here, here and here. One of the best parts of it all is that I now consider these talented ladies friends. When the day finally arrived on April 1, it was so exciting. We got to see old vendor friends and meet new ones as well as tons of great couples from all over the place.

I knew what I wanted our booth to look like long ago. I've been obsessing over copper, rose and pink. I made a wild and lush bridal bouquet and used one of my custom stands to display it.

My centerpiece was 6 foot antique feed trough in a rough dark copper color. I filled it to bursting with fresh pink blooms, red grapes and dark plum colored accents.  We were fortunate to have access to Maggpie's great  farm table and chairs which were the perfect canvas for my designs. If you love the farm table look, you need to get in touch with them. The tables are gorgeous, handmade and super reasonably priced for rental.

I used this event as my opportunity to unveil a gorgeous new prop I designed, the fireplace. I think this would make a stunning ceremony backdrop or centerpiece of a cocktail hour.  What do you think?
