Yesterday my husband T.O. and I went to the Barnes Foundation in Lower Merion, just outside of Philadelphia. I had been to the Barnes years ago but T.O. never had. Dr.Barnes collection of mostly Impressionist art is moving to a new museum in Center City in May 2012 so we thought it would be nice to go before the move. The Foundation does not allow photos so I took some on the grounds, it was a lovely warm day and we explored the whole property and found that Dr. Barnes collected horticultural specimens just like his art. The Merion property will be used as an archive and horticultural center in the future. Dr. Barnes is a fascinating character. His collection is astoundingly beautiful and very interesting. I highly recommend a visit before the big move though they are preserving the gallery layouts designed by Dr. Barnes himself in the new location.
